New SIKA Liquid and slate domestic roof in County Durham

Solution

Spanish Slate Grade A and SIKA liquid

Project Duration

6 weeks

DVC Commercial Roofing recently completed the roof install on an executive new build development property. The solution included natural slate and clay ridge dry fixed for the main roof and SIKA Liquid for the flat roofing. The 240m2 project took six weeks for our experienced, new build roofing team to finish from brief to completion.

The client chose the Estillo Blue Black slate provided by Slate UK. A natural Spanish grade A slate, the Elstillo has a timeless appearance and is of high quality.

WHY SLATE WAS THE BEST SOLUTION FOR THIS PROJECT

Slate’s low water absorption will make the roof resistant to frost damage. With the natural ability to be fire and mould resistant, slate roofing is an extremely durable and reliable solution. Good quality slate is unlikely to deteriorate over time.

The installation is as necessary as the product quality. As slate can fail due to poor workmanship, it is crucial that the DVC team are experienced in slate roofing to ensure a consistently high-quality of installation.

The new build also required flat roofs to the rear of the development; we supplied and installed SIKA Liquid Plastics. DVC Roofing are Quality Assured contractors for SIKA Liquid Plastics.

The SIKA Solution provides the ideal waterproofing, protecting the building from the unpredicted UK weather. SIKA will eliminate the risk of leaks from the roof, providing a robust all-round solution. Importantly the waterproofing comes with a 20-year guarantee and gives our client peace of mind against future water ingress.

Project Q&A

What roofing solution was used for this project?

The project utilised a high-performance combination of Spanish Slate Grade A for the main pitched roof and SIKA Liquid Plastics for the flat roofing areas. This dual-system approach ensured both visual appeal and long-term waterproofing protection across different roof structures.

Why was Spanish Grade A slate selected?

Spanish Grade A slate was chosen due to its exceptional durability, natural appearance, and long lifespan. The client specifically selected Estillo Blue Black slate, a premium natural slate known for its consistent colour, elegant finish, and high resistance to environmental wear.

Slate offers extremely low water absorption, making it highly resistant to frost damage — a critical consideration for buildings exposed to the variable UK climate. Additionally, slate is naturally fire-resistant and mould-resistant, contributing to a safer and more robust roofing system.

What are the benefits of slate roofing for new build properties?

Slate is widely regarded as one of the most reliable and long-lasting roofing materials available. Key benefits include:

  • Excellent resistance to harsh weather conditions
  • Minimal water absorption and strong frost resistance
  • Natural fire and mould resistance
  • Extremely long service life with minimal deterioration

For executive new build developments, slate also delivers a timeless, high-end aesthetic that enhances the overall appearance and value of the property.

Is installation quality important with slate roofing?

Yes — installation quality is absolutely critical. Even the highest quality slate can underperform if not installed correctly. Slate failures are commonly linked to poor workmanship rather than material defects.

This is why experienced slate roofing specialists are essential. Proper fixing methods, detailing, and ventilation practices ensure the roof performs as intended over decades. The DVC new build roofing team’s expertise ensures a consistently high standard of installation.

What flat roofing system was installed?

For the flat roofing sections at the rear of the development, SIKA Liquid Plastics was supplied and installed. This modern liquid-applied system creates a seamless, fully bonded waterproof membrane, eliminating common weak points found in traditional flat roofing methods.

Why were the SIKA Liquid system chosen?

SIKA Liquid Plastics provides exceptional waterproofing performance and is particularly suited to complex roof details and flat roof designs. The system offers:

  • Seamless, joint-free waterproof protection
  • High flexibility and crack-bridging capability
  • Excellent resistance to UK weather conditions
  • Long-term durability

Importantly, the system is backed by a 20-year guarantee, providing the client with long-term confidence and protection against water ingress.

Are DVC certified installers for SIKA Liquid Plastics?

Yes. DVC Roofing are Quality Assured contractors for SIKA Liquid Plastics. This certification ensures installations meet strict manufacturer standards, technical requirements, and performance expectations.
