Tackling Flat Roof Repair
In the scope of our commercial project at the RMBI Care Home, we undertook the critical task of repairing the flat roof, which was marred by issues stemming from a defective single ply covering at the seams, leading to troubling water ingress. The resultant damage had even impacted the insulation boards, dislodging them from their intended place on the roof substrate.
Implementing Firestone EPDM Roofing
To combat these challenges and ensure a robust solution, we opted for the trusted Firestone EPDM Rubber Roofing system. Renowned for its durability and reliability, it was the logical choice for this critical project.
Our approach commenced with the meticulous removal of the compromised roof layers, unveiling the concrete screed underneath. To enhance insulation and structural integrity, a substantial 100 mm layer of insulation was applied.
Customising the Approach: Balancing Functionality and Safety
Considering the roof’s unique function as a balcony for the care home residents, our strategy necessitated careful adaptation. Instead of the conventional application of Firestone EPDM single ply directly to the insulation, we introduced a 22mm Tongue and Groove board as an intermediary layer.
This strategic decision not only reinforced the structural integrity of the roof but also provided a sturdy base for the subsequent application of the Firestone EPDM Rubber Roof, ensuring longevity and reliability.
Prioritising Safety: Incorporating EPDM Rubber Mats
In anticipation of residents utilising the balcony area, we surpassed expectations by incorporating EPDM rubber mats. These mats, with designated yellow markings indicating exit points, serve a dual purpose of enhancing safety and minimising potential damage in case of accidents.

We produced a faultless final product that exceeded our expectations as the conclusion of our work. By applying Firestone EPDM roofing with precision, we were able to prioritise the well-being and safety of the occupants of the care home while simultaneously addressing the intricate issues of flat roof restoration.
