Roof refurbishment works of Kendal College – latest update
As planned, the contract to undertake over 2000m² of flat roof works at the Milnthorpe Road Campus at Kendal College in South Lakes began in mid-February.
Once a working compound had been created and site scaffolding had been erected, our flat roofing team began works to install the new Protan single-ply PVC warm roof system, which DVC Commercial Roofing Contractors specified in conjunction with Moy Materials.
Since starting, our flat roofing team have battled against weather synonymous with the Lake District however, our team have not been deterred and are still on track to hopefully be complete within the scheduled 12-week program of works.
As there is a large presence of solar photovoltaic panels on the roof, to enable our team to install the new roof waterproofing system efficiently, the solar thermal system and solar photovoltaic panels were required to be stripped and removed. Following this…working alongside specialist asbestos remover, North East Refurbishments, the low-grade asbestos sheeting was removed safely from the building’s parapet and disposed of in accordance with The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.
After which, our flat roofing team could begin to install the new air and vapour control layer, which is designed to reduce the risk of interstitial condensation and can also control air and heat leakage from within the building. We have since started to install the new PIR insulation to ensure the building is now compliant with The Building Regulations 2010: Conservation of fuel and power-Approved document L1B. The new Protan EX-A waterproof covering has been installed simultaneously with the insulation to ensure the building remains watertight throughout.
All works to date have been installed in compliance with BS 6229:2018: Flat roofs with continuously supported flexible waterproof coverings – Code of practice and we are looking forward to handing over a watertight roof system which is guaranteed for the next 20 years and is certified by the BBA Approval Inspection Certification to have a life expectancy of at least 40 years.
Upon project completion, we will upload further imagery of the roof refurbishment to our website.
