DVC Roofing Bid Writer

Behind every successful project is a team of dedicated people working behind the scenes to turn opportunities into reality. From the initial planning stages to the final submission, bid writing plays a vital role in showcasing the expertise, commitment and values that set a business apart.

In this Q&A, we speak to Becky Smiles, Bid Writer at DVC Roofing, to find out more about her role, the challenges and rewards of the job, and how she helps bring the company’s capabilities to life through every bid.

1. Can you tell us a little bit about your role as Bid Writer at DVC Roofing and what your main responsibilities are?

As Bid Writer at DVC, I am responsible for preparing and submitting high-quality tender and framework applications across the public and private sectors.

My role involves coordinating information from across the business, understanding clients’ requirements, and developing clear, compelling responses that demonstrate DVC Roofing’s technical expertise, quality standards, safety culture, and social value commitments.

I also maintain the company library of bid content, certifications, case studies and evidence to ensure every submission is accurate, compliant and tailored to the opportunity.

2. What does a typical day in your role look like? Is there a set routine, or does every day bring something different?

No two days are ever quite the same, which is one of the things I enjoy most about the role. A typical day might involve reviewing new tender opportunities, attending internal meetings with our operational teams, gathering information and evidence for submissions, writing responses, or managing multiple deadlines.

I also attend market engagement events, supplier forums and industry conferences to connect with clients, explore upcoming projects and understand industry priorities. From detailed research to refining content and showcasing the company’s strengths, the variety keeps my role interesting and evolving.

3. What do you enjoy most about being a Bid Writer, and what makes the role rewarding for you?

I enjoy bringing together information from different parts of the business and turning it into a strong, persuasive submission. It’s rewarding to highlight the expertise, achievements and values of the team and demonstrate why DVC Roofing is the right choice for a project.

4. What’s the most challenging part of your role, and how do you approach it?

One of the biggest challenges is balancing multiple deadlines while ensuring every submission remains bespoke and of a high standard. Each client has different priorities and evaluation criteria, so it’s important to understand exactly what they are looking for rather than relying on generic responses.

I approach this by staying organised, planning ahead, maintaining strong communication with colleagues, and continually reviewing and improving our bid content to ensure it remains relevant and competitive.

5. What skills or qualities do you think are most important for someone working in bid writing?

Strong written communication is essential, but successful bid writing also requires organisation, attention to detail, time management and the ability to interpret complex requirements. Curiosity is equally important, as you need to ask questions, understand technical information and learn about different projects and clients.

Being able to collaborate effectively with people across the business is also key, as the best submissions are built on contributions from a wide range of expertise.

6. What advice would you give to someone interested in pursuing a career in bid writing or a similar role?

Develop your writing skills, also focus on learning how businesses operate and how to communicate value to different audiences. Be willing to ask questions, carry out research and learn about new industries.

Attention to detail is crucial, but so is the ability to see the bigger picture and understand what clients really want. Most importantly, stay curious and be prepared to keep learning, as every bid is different and every opportunity presents a new challenge.

“One of the things I enjoy most about bid writing is that every project tells a different story. My role is to make sure that story clearly demonstrates the quality, expertise and commitment that DVC Roofing brings to every contract.” – Becky Smiles, Bid Writer
