Alex Davis

Behind every successful commercial roofing project is a foundation built on planning, coordination, and precise execution.

We sat down with Alex, Junior Contracts Supervisor at DVC Roofing, to explore the responsibilities and daily activities that ensure smooth project delivery, clear communication, and adherence to deadlines.

From coordinating site schedules and liaising with contracts managers to monitoring progress and maintaining critical documentation, this key behind-the-scenes role helps ensure that every commercial roofing and industrial roofing project runs efficiently, meets quality standards, and delivers exceptional results for clients.

1. What does a typical day look like for a Junior Site Supervisor at DVC Roofing?

A typical day would start with a site walk to assess safety, progress, and any immediate issues. I’d check that all safety measures like edge protection and PPE are in place, then brief the team on the day’s tasks and priorities.

Throughout the day, I’d monitor progress against the programme, coordinate with subcontractors, and make sure materials and equipment are available when needed. If any issues come up like delays, weather changes, or technical problems, I’d help resolve them quickly while keeping the contracts managers informed.

I’d also carry out quality checks to ensure the roofing work meets specifications and standards, and keep records updated. At the end of the day, I’d review progress and plan for the next day.

2. What do you enjoy most about this role?

What I enjoy most is the variety and the hands-on nature of the work. Every day is different, and you’re constantly solving problems and working with people.

I also like seeing the physical progress of a project, from start to finish, which gives a real sense of achievement. Being part of a team and contributing to delivering a high-quality roofing solutions is very rewarding.

3. How do you manage multiple tasks or responsibilities?

I manage multiple tasks by staying organised and breaking work down into manageable priorities. I usually keep a clear list of tasks for the day and track progress as I go.

Communication is key, I make sure everyone involved knows what’s expected and when. I also try to stay flexible, because on-site things can change quickly, so being able to adapt while still keeping control of the overall workload is important.

4. How do you prioritise your workload on a busy day?

I prioritise based on safety first, then deadlines, and then overall impact on the project. Anything that could affect safety or cause delays to the project gets immediate attention.

After that, I focus on tasks that keep the job moving efficiently, like ensuring materials are ready or coordinating trades. I also keep in close contact with the team so I can quickly adjust priorities if something changes.

5. How do you communicate with different teams on-site?

I focus on being clear, direct, and consistent. At the start of the day, I’d make sure everyone understands their tasks and expectations.

Throughout the day, I’d check in regularly with workers, subcontractors, and contracts managers to keep everything running smoothly. I also listen carefully to feedback from the team, as they often spot issues early. Good communication helps prevent misunderstandings and keeps the project on track.

6. How do you stay organised in a fast-paced environment?

I stay organised by planning ahead and keeping everything structured. I use daily plans, checklists, and clear communication to stay on top of tasks.

I also make sure to keep notes and track progress throughout the day, so nothing gets missed. Staying calm and methodical, even when things get busy, helps me maintain control and keep everything running efficiently.

7. What advice would you give to someone interested in Junior Site Supervisor?

I’d say be willing to learn and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Gaining hands-on experience on-site is really important, as is understanding health and safety.

Good communication and a strong work ethic will take you far in this role. It’s also important to stay organised and be reliable, as people depend on you to keep things running smoothly.

Finally, be patient skills and confidence come with time, and every day on-site is an opportunity to learn something new.
