Roof Refurbishment at Leeds Playhouse Theatre Takes Centre Stage
Overview
Leeds Council selected DVC Commercial Roofing as the principal contractor for the roof refurbishment works at Leeds Playhouse Theatre. The project involved over 3000m² of roof refurbishment, which included the supply of scaffolding, renewing the flat roof waterproofing system, replacing roof lights, and upgrading air conditioning and M&E units.
Challenge
The existing roof at Leeds Playhouse Theatre had not been refurbished for over 30 years and required a comprehensive upgrade. The project needed to address multiple challenges, including a certified, long-lasting waterproofing system compliant with building regulations and minimising disruption to the theatre’s operations during the works.
Solution
To meet the project requirements, a thorough roof condition survey was conducted by Moy Materials. Based on the survey findings, Moy Materials specified a fit-for-purpose solution with their single-ply PVC warm roof system. This system offered Leeds Playhouse Theatre a waterproofing solution that is BBA certified and meets current building regulations and British Standards.
The project commenced in September 2022, and the works were estimated to last approximately 26 weeks. DVC Commercial Roofing ensured minimal disruption to the theatre’s daily operations throughout the project, allowing shows to continue as scheduled. The refurbishment works included the installation of a new metal deck, VCL, Flat & Tapered PIR insulation, and mechanically fixed Protan Single Ply Membrane. Additionally, M&E works were carried out, involving disconnecting and re-installing AHUs, as well as installing new HRU and A/C units.
Despite challenging weather conditions, the project was successfully completed within the scheduled timeframe. The works were delivered without causing any disruption to the shows or the daily running of Leeds Playhouse Theatre.
