Industrial Roof Replacement: Velocity Sunderland

Project Overview

The roof refurbishment works at Velocity UK in Sunderland are now complete.  The 8-week program of works included 1500m² of industrial over sheeting as well as a thermal upgrade, all while the building remained operational.
Following the completion of a roof condition survey, it became apparent that the existing roof waterproofing system at Velocity UK had come to the end of its serviceable life, was not offering suitable protection to the building, and, as such, was in need of a full refurbishment.  A subsequent roof condition report and roof refurbishment specification were provided to allow Velocity UK to make an informed decision on how they would like to refurbish their roof.

Solution

Due to the condition of the existing roof waterproofing system, DVC, trusted commercial roofing contractors recommended a full roof refurbishment with a Firth Steels plastisol-coated single sheet utilising an Ashgrid Roof Spacer System. Velocity UK also opted for new roof lights and a thermal insulation upgrade alongside their new roof waterproofing system.

The new waterproofing system is now guaranteed and certified, giving Velocity UK peace of mind for many years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions: Expert Commercial Roofing Company

Q1: What is an industrial roof condition survey?

A roof condition survey assesses the waterproofing, insulation, structure, and lifespan of an existing roof. It helps facility managers plan repairs or refurbishment before major issues occur.

Q2: What is industrial roof over-sheeting?

Over-sheeting involves installing a new roofing system over an existing roof, improving waterproofing and insulation while reducing disruption and waste.

Q3: Can roof refurbishment be completed while a building is operational?

Yes. As demonstrated at Velocity UK, experienced commercial roofing contractors can safely complete works while businesses continue operating.

Q4: How long does an industrial roof refurbishment last?

Modern over-sheeting systems can extend roof life by 20–30 years when installed correctly and maintained properly.

Q5: Do you offer industrial roofing services in the North East?

DVC Commercial Roofing delivers industrial and commercial roofing services across Sunderland, Newcastle, Manchester, and the wider UK.

Q6: When should a commercial roof be repaired instead of replaced?

Commercial roof repair is suitable when damage is localised, such as minor leaks or membrane issues. Prompt action can extend the lifespan of the roof and delay the need for full replacement. However, if problems are recurring or the roof is near the end of its lifespan, it may be more cost-effective to repair a commercial roof only as a short-term solution before planning replacement.

Q7: When is a commercial roof replacement the best option?

A commercial roof replacement is recommended when the roof has extensive damage, structural deterioration, or persistent leaks that repairs can no longer resolve. Replacement provides improved insulation, better waterproofing, and long-term performance, often reducing maintenance and energy costs.
