Prepare your commercial roof for winter
We are now officially in Autumn; the colder weather is setting in with the unpredictability of blustery winds, rain, and colder temperatures. Aside from dusting off the woolly jumpers and worrying about energy prices, now is a good time for commercial property owners to ensure their roofs are fit for purpose and keep the outside outside!
Flat roofs can be particularly vulnerable during extreme weather conditions in Autumn and Winter, especially if routine roof maintenance is not carried out. A lack of routine roof maintenance can result in water ingress, subsequently causing damage to the fabric of the building and potentially resulting in costly repairs and/or roof replacements.
PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
Your roof protects the contents of your building from the elements, and it is vital to check its condition regularly. As part of the maintenance, we recommend that an experienced roofing contractor carries out regular inspections to support the extended lifespan of your commercial roof.
BS 6229:2018 describes best practices for maintaining roofs with a flat or curved surface…
‘All maintenance ensures the roof continues to perform and that any potential problems are identified at an early stage. Regular routine maintenance should also be carried out where standing water exists to deter a build-up of algae or silt, which may, in turn, have a detrimental impact on the surface of the waterproofing.’
As a preventative measure, commercial roof inspections are recommended at least once a year. Should you require this service before heading into autumn or winter, one of our experienced roof surveyors would welcome the opportunity to carry out a roof survey on your behalf.
