Roof Refurbishment for Lanchester Wines

Delivering Long-Term Roof Protection for a Wine Distributor

DVC Commercial Roofing was appointed by Lanchester Wines to undertake a comprehensive roof refurbishment project at its warehouse facility, delivering a cost-effective solution designed to maximise the performance and lifespan of the existing roof system.

Covering an area of approximately 7,700m², the project was completed within 13-week programme while ensuring minimal disruption to the client’s day-to-day operations.

As one of the UK’s leading independent wine merchants, Lanchester Wines relies on its warehouse facilities to store and distribute valuable stock. Maintaining a watertight and reliable roofing system was therefore essential to protect both the building and its contents.

Following a detailed roof assessment, DVC Commercial Roofing developed a refurbishment strategy that addressed existing defects, improved weather resistance, and extended the service life of the roof without the need for a costly full replacement.

Scope of Works

The refurbishment works focused on several key areas of the roofing system, including gutters, roof sheets, flashings, rooflights, and general repairs.

A significant element of the project involved the refurbishment of 420 linear metres of gutters. Rather than replacing the existing system, DVC Roofing installed a new gutter liner and applied a Giromax liquid waterproofing coating to create a seamless, durable waterproof barrier. This solution restored the performance of the gutters, improved resistance to adverse weather conditions, and significantly reduced the risk of water ingress.

The project also addressed 298 linear metres of cut-edge corrosion along the roof sheet laps. Left untreated, cut-edge corrosion can progressively compromise the integrity of a roof and lead to costly future repairs. Using the specialist Giromax treatment system, the affected areas were carefully prepared, treated, and protected to prevent further deterioration and extend the lifespan of the roof covering.

To further enhance the building’s weatherproofing performance, DVC installed 280 linear metres of new cappings to both the north and south elevations of the building. In addition, 280 linear metres of new ridge flashings and foam fillers were fitted to improve sealing and provide enhanced protection against wind-driven rain and water penetration.

Alongside these larger refurbishment elements, isolated roof repairs were completed across the roof area to address localised defects and ensure the entire roofing system remained watertight. These targeted repairs formed an important part of the overall refurbishment strategy, helping to safeguard the building, protect stored goods, and minimise future maintenance requirements.

Transforming the Internal Environment

One of the most impactful aspects of the project was the replacement of 108 existing rooflights with new Filon rooflights.

Prior to the refurbishment, the warehouse suffered from poor natural light levels, creating a relatively dark internal environment. The ageing rooflights had deteriorated over time, reducing light transmission and limiting the amount of daylight entering the building.

The installation of the new Filon rooflights dramatically transformed the space. Natural daylight levels throughout the warehouse increased significantly, creating a brighter, more welcoming, and productive working environment for employees. Improved visibility across the warehouse floor has also enhanced operational efficiency and contributed to a safer workplace.

In addition to the internal benefits, the new rooflights provide improved durability and weather resistance, further contributing to the long-term performance of the refurbished roof system.

Efficient Delivery and Minimal Disruption

Completing a project of this scale within a live operational environment required careful planning and coordination. DVC Commercial Roofing worked closely with Lanchester Wines throughout the programme to ensure works were delivered safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption to warehouse activities.

Despite the extensive scope of works, the entire refurbishment was successfully completed within 13-weeks. Effective project management, experienced installation teams, and a clear focus on quality ensured the programme remained on schedule while maintaining the highest standards of workmanship.

Specialists Commercial Roofing Contractors

The completed refurbishment has successfully restored and enhanced the performance of the existing roof, providing Lanchester Wines with a durable, long-term solution that avoids the cost and disruption associated with a full roof replacement.

Through a combination of gutter refurbishment, cut-edge corrosion treatment, upgraded flashings and cappings, targeted roof repairs, and the installation of new rooflights, the project has significantly improved weather protection, reduced the risk of future maintenance issues, and extended the operational lifespan of the roof.

Most importantly, the works have delivered tangible benefits both externally and internally, protecting the client’s assets while creating a brighter and more productive warehouse environment for employees.

This project highlights DVC Commercial Roofing’s expertise in delivering tailored refurbishment solutions that maximise the value of existing roofing assets, providing clients with practical, cost-effective results that stand the test of time.

Q&A: Roof Refurbishment Contractors

What was the size of the project?

The roof refurbishment covered approximately 7,700m² of roofing area.

How long did the project take?

The project was completed within a 13-week programme, ensuring minimal disruption to the client’s ongoing operations.

What roofing works were completed?

The refurbishment included:

  • 420 linear metres of gutter refurbishment with a new gutter liner and Giromax liquid waterproofing system.
  • Treatment of 298 linear metres of cut-edge corrosion using the Giromax system.
  • Installation of 280 linear metres of new cappings.
  • Installation of 280 linear metres of new ridge flashings and foam fillers.
  • Isolated roof repairs across the roof area.
  • Replacement of 108 existing rooflights with new Filon rooflights.

Why was refurbishment chosen instead of roof replacement?

The existing roof structure remained fundamentally sound, making refurbishment the most cost-effective solution. By addressing key areas of deterioration and improving weatherproofing, the roof’s lifespan could be significantly extended without the expense and disruption of a full replacement.

What challenges did the project address?

The roof showed signs of ageing, including gutter deterioration, cut-edge corrosion, and ageing rooflights that limited natural daylight levels within the warehouse. These issues required attention to maintain the building’s integrity and protect stored goods.

What benefits did the new rooflights provide?

The replacement of 108 rooflights dramatically increased natural daylight throughout the warehouse. This created a brighter, safer, and more productive working environment while also improving the overall appearance and functionality of the space.

How was weather protection improved?

The combination of gutter refurbishment, corrosion treatment, new cappings, ridge flashings, foam fillers, and targeted repairs created a comprehensive weatherproofing solution, reducing the risk of water ingress and future deterioration.

What was the outcome of the project?

The completed refurbishment enhanced the roof’s performance, improved weather resistance, extended its service life, and delivered a long-term, cost-effective solution for Lanchester Wines without the need for a full roof replacement.
